Human Rights Org. on Arab Apartheid in Yemen

Alternative report submitted to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights when reviewing the second periodic report of Yemen: HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION OF THE AL-AKHDAM IN YEMEN
May 2011
The All Youth Network for Society Development in association with the International Dalit Solidarity Network (IDSN) is pleased to submit this parallel report on the occasion of the review of Yemen to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) at its 46th session.
The report focuses specifically on the human rights situation of the Al-Akhdam community in Yemen, a situation which has been addressed by the Committee in the List of Issues For centuries the Al-Akhdam has suffered perpetual discrimination, persecution and ensuing crimesat Yemens most marginal social, economic, and political spaces where they are violently excluded from mainstream society as an untouchable ethnic outcaste.
Social discrimination faced by the Al-Akhdam
Local folklore proverbs, inherited over generations, have helped isolating the Akhdam socially andhave enhanced enhanced apartheid-like differences. Such proverbs indicate that the Akhdam are unclean and dirty, e.g. Never be lured by Akhdam, who are dirty even in bones or: If a dog eats in your saucer, clean it; but if a khadem eats in your saucer, break it. http://www2.ohchr.org/english/bodies/cescr/docs/ngos/AYNSD_IDSN_Yemen46.pdf

Syria remains dangerous regime
Posted on Friday, 06.10.11
BY FRIDA GHITIS
The Syrian people have good reason to feel let down by those around the world who claim to believe passionately in human rights and democracy. The international community has shown misguided restraint in condemning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s slaughter of his own people. In trying to prove he should be allowed to stay in power, Assad has shown exactly the opposite.
[...]
This is not just about Assad. Syrian demonstrators have been chanting “No to Assad,” but also “No to Iran, No to Hezbollah!” The protests threaten the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah-Hamas bloc. There is much at stake here not just for the regime in Damascus but for the entire region. Syria and Iran have kept Hamas and Hezbollah stockpiled with weapons. Without Damascus, the structure would wobble; perhaps fall.

The lesson from the border protests is that Assad leads an exceedingly dangerous regime. If his brutality against the Syrian people was not enough, his willingness to trigger another regional war — with the support of his allies in Tehran, Beirut and Gaza — should convince the international community to impose stern sanctions, and work for his removal.

The mask of the Assad regime finally falls, and the world is forced to confront its illusions about Iran's ally and Hezbollah's patron.

Pity the Syrians as they face the Assad regime's tanks and artillery and snipers. Unlike in Libya, there is no Arab or international "mandate" to protect them. Grant Syria's rulers their due: Their country rides with the Iranian theocracy and provides it access to the Mediterranean. It is a patron of Hamas and Hezbollah. And still they managed to sell the outside world on the legend of their moderation.

A new Hama on the Turkish border Asia Times Online
By Victor Kotsev
June 15, 2011
TEL AVIV - In 1982, on orders by current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's father, Hafez, the Syrian army destroyed much of the city of Hama and killed somewhere between 10,000 and 40,000 people. The memory of that Muslim Brotherhood uprising and the government massacre is so strong in Syria that arguably it was a crucial factor in rekindling the current unrest after some 70 demonstrators were killed in Hama 10 days ago.

Now, the town of Jisr al-Shoughour seems set on becoming the new Hama - "a" new Hama, if we believe much of what is being written and said about the situation in Syria, with other cities to follow. It does not mean that the comparison is realistic - all other discrepancies aside, the town with its approximately 50,000 inhabitants is no comparison to Hama, the fourth-largest city in Syria - but then again, leading Western ethicists of the past few decades have taught us not to compare numbers of victims.

Sky News: Clinton accuses Iran of backing Syria
Updated: 03:32, Wednesday June 15, 2011
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday accused Iran of backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's 'vicious assaults' on pro-democracy protesters after crushing its own 2009 uprising.
'Iran is supporting the Assad regime's vicious assaults on peaceful protesters and military actions against its own cities,' Clinton said, comparing its response to Iran's crackdown on pro-reform demonstrations.
'Two years ago this week, Iranian citizens went to the polls in the hopes of expressing their democratic rights,' she said.
'When the people reached for their aspirations, the government responded with brutal repression. Two years later, that repression continues.'
Syria's uprising was triggered in mid-March by the arrest and torture of 15 children and adolescents accused of spraying anti-regime graffiti in the southern town of Daraa, which then became the epicentre of the revolt.
The UN children's agency UNICEF has since said that at least 30 children have been shot dead in the revolt against the Assad family's 40-year rule...

The Hajj: Terrorism Potential Abounds

By Fred Burton and Scott Stewart

More than 2 million Muslims from around the world are expected to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj, that annual pilgrimage to Mecca that runs this year Dec. 18-21.

Because of the history of violence during the Hajj — some of it extreme — Saudi officials step up security during the period, and last week they concluded what they called the country’s largest-ever anti-terrorism security sweep — an operation that resulted in the arrest of more than 200 suspected al Qaeda militants. Riyadh said the operation was intended as a warning to militants who would seek to abuse the event and disturb the pilgrims. Because of past debacles during the Hajj, the Saudi government nowadays can be expected to deal with any militant activity quickly and harshly.

ISLAMIC "PALESTINIAN" APARTHEID - Expert: 'Christian groups in PA to disappear'

http://www.jpost. com/servlet/ Satellite? pagename= JPost%2FJPArticl e\
%2FShowFull& cid=119554679587 4

Expert: 'Christian groups in PA to disappear'
Etgar Lefkovits , THE JERUSALEM POST Dec. 4, 2007
The ever-dwindling Christian communities living in
Palestinian- run territories in the West Bank and Gaza are likely
to dissipate completely within the next 15 years as a result of
increasing Muslim persecution and maltreatment, an Israeli
scholar said Monday.

"The systematic persecution of Christian Arabs living in
Palestinian areas is being met with nearly total silence by the
international community, human rights activists, the media and
NGOs," said Justus Reid Weiner, an international human rights
lawyer in an address at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs,
where he serves as a scholar in residence.

He cited Muslim harassment and persecution as the main cause of
the "acute human rights crisis" facing Christian Arabs, and
predicted that unless governments or institutions step in to
remedy the situation - such as with job opportunities - there
will be no more Christian communities living in the Palestinians
territories within 15 years, with only a few Western Christians
and top clergymen left in the area.

"Christian leaders are being forced to abandon their followers to
the forces of radical Islam," Weiner said.

Facing a pernicious mixture of persecution and economic hardships
as a result of years of Palestinian violence and Israeli
counter-terrorism measures, tens of thousands of Christian Arabs
have left the Palestinian territories for a better life in the
West, in a continuing exodus which has led some Christian leaders
to warn that the faith could be virtually extinct in its
birthplace in a matter of decades.

The Palestinian Christian population has dipped to 1.5 percent of
the West Bank and Gaza Strip, down from at least 15% a half
century ago, according to some estimates.

No one city in the Holy Land is more indicative of the great
exodus of Christians than Bethlehem, which fell under full
Palestinian control last decade as part of the Oslo Accords.

The town of 30,000 is now less than 20% Christian, after decades
when Christians were the majority. Elsewhere in the Palestinian
territories, only about 3,000 Christians, mostly Greek Orthodox,
live in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, out of a strongly conservative
Muslim population of 1.4 million.

"In a society where Arab Christians have no voice and no
protection it is no surprise that they are leaving," he said.

In his address, Weiner pointedly downplayed the effects that
Israeli security measures, such as the security barrier being
built between Israel and the West Bank, have had on the Christian
Arabs living in the West Bank.

The barrier, which is especially conspicuous at the entrance to
Bethlehem where it is a concrete wall, is an issue which many
Palestinian Christian clerics have pointed to, along with the
ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as a central cause of
Christian emigration.

Weiner argued there was a "180 degree difference" between the
public statements coming out of the mainstream Christian
leadership in the Holy Land - who "sing the PA's tune" and blame
Israel for all the Christian Arabs' ills - and people's
experience on the ground.

"The truth is beginning to come out," he said. "The question is
what is being done with the truth."

His comments come just months after a prominent Christian
activist, Rami Khader Ayyad, 32, was killed in Gaza.

"For too long the plight of Christian Arabs has been put on the
back-burner or ignored altogether," said Rev. Malcolm Hedding,
executive director of the International Christian Embassy, a
Jerusalem-based evangelical organization.

The Evangelical leader, who has drawn the wrath of Catholic
leaders in the Holy Land for his strong support for Israel, said
that "power politics" has prevented the major Christian leaders
in the Holy Land from speaking out on this issue.

"There is a one-sided debate in which Israel is responsible for
everything," he said. "The Christian world needs to stand up and
speak out about this."

Hamas, Teddy Bears in Sudan and the Muslim Brotherhood Douglas Farah

There are two places where the Muslim Brotherhood exercises governmental power-Sudan and the Palestinian territories. That is, where it controls the levers of the state. It seems to me it is worth looking at these states to see how the Brotherhood would govern if given the chance, and to see the real agenda of the organization that claims to represent moderate, modernizing and tolerant interpretations of Islam.

For an excellent summary of why the Muslim Brotherhood is such an important topic, see this new paper by [http://www.futureofmuslimworld.com/research/pubID.72/pub_detail.asp#%22] Hillel Fradkin of the Hudson Institute.

EU rights champion urges Europe to act on Darfur
Tue 4 Dec 2007, 17:44 GMT

[-] Text [+] By David Brunnstrom

BRUSSELS, Dec 4 (Reuters) - The winner of the European Union's top human rights prize demanded on Tuesday that the bloc take a more active role in resolving the Darfur crisis, saying it could not simply stand by during "genocide".

Speaking before an EU-Africa summit this weekend, Sudanese lawyer Salih Mahmoud Osman called on the EU to commit troops for a Darfur peace force and help bring rights abusers to justice.

"Europe has always been talking tough about the policies of the government of Sudan, but we don't see acts," he told a news briefing in Brussels. "Europe is confused, it is divided on the issue of Darfur. The EU hasn't any unified political will."

International experts estimate 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million uprooted in Darfur since mostly non-Arabs took up arms in early 2003 accusing Khartoum of neglect. Khartoum says 9,000 have died.

,b>FARROW ATTACKS SUDAN'S 'CRUEL' LEADERS 2007-12-04...

Actress MIA FARROW has blasted Sudanese leaders for jailing a British schoolteacher accused of blasphemy, calling their treatment of her a typical act of "palpable insanity and cruelty".
The UNICEF goodwill ambassador hopes the imprisonment of Gillian Gibbons who was incarcerated for allowing her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad will highlight the tyrannical control the downtrodden people of Darfur are forced to live under and, in turn, prompt Westerners to help them.
However, Farrow - who was in London on Sunday (02Dec07) to launch new campaign Fund4Darfur - is outraged that Gibbons' plight grabbed the headlines when the bigger issues facing the war-ravaged folk of Darfur are still being ignored by the media.
She said, "One white woman in peril with a teddy bear has captured more media attention than the past three years of our brothers and sisters in the Darfur region.
"This is the first genocide of the 21st century and the one genocide that is ongoing as we speak. We have ,b>a regime that launched a military campaign on an unarmed population for no other reason than that they are not Arab." Fund4Darfur will aid the survivors of the fighting between Sudan's government and Darfur's rebels, who have been at war for four years, resulting in 200,000 casualties and 2.5 million being forced from their homes.

TV Review: HBO - Sand And Sorrow
December 3rd, 2007 by Simon Barrett
Genocide, it’s just a word, it’s a word that you read in history books. But what does it really mean? Well, if you want to get rid of weeds in your lawn you use a herbicide, if ants are invading your house you likely will use a pesticide. You have probably noticed the use of the word ending ‘cide’. There are lots of words that end with ‘cide’ and I can not think of a single one that is good! A little bit of research reveals that ‘cide’ comes from Latin, and in it’s basic form, it means ‘to kill’. Genocide is the systematic removal of a people, and genocide is what is happening in the Sudan right now.

HBO are definitely making a name for themselves in the documentary world, they are willing to take on projects that the other networks turn a blind eye to. Sand And Sorrow takes a very long hard look at the African country of Sudan, more specifically the Darfur region and the genocide that has been taking place.

Without doubt this is one of the worlds poorest regions, with few natural resources, and no strategic geographic location, no-one seems to want to help the people. I may be cynical, but I am sure that if Darfur had oil, the world powers would be breaking their necks to help.

Sand And Sorrow explores what is happening in Darfur, and the findings are not good. This is not about religion, everyone is Muslim, this is about Arab versus Non Arab. The Arab led government in Khartoum is systematically killing the non-arab population of Darfur, moving village by village the militia are killing and raping their way through the region. It is estimated by some that the number of dead exceeds 400,000.

This is must see TV, produced and narrated by George Clooney, this is both a disturbing and frighting look at a situation that we, as decent people should not allow. Sand And Sorrow pulls no punches and the footage that is used is horrific. It not only shows the current status of the Sudan but explores the history and the West’s apparent apathy toward the problem. The US comes out of this in a very poor light, because Khartoum is on board with the ‘War on Terror’ the US is loath to intervene, the other world body that could help is the UN, but they are portrayed as a toothless Bulldog, growling and snarling, but unable to act for fear of veto by China or Russia.

This is indeed a very sad situation.

I am involved on the fringes of the education system here in Canada, and one of the groups I work with is the Immigrant Youth Organization, these are primarily young people who are refugees, many of who are from the Sudan. I had noticed how reticent they were to discuss their previous lives, through Sand And Sorrow I now understand why. They have lived through a nightmare that is unbelievably shocking.

Sand And Sorrow premiers December the 6th at 8pm on HBO. There is an accompanying web site which contains some interesting background, and a short trailer. If you cannot receive HBO or cannot make the airing you will be able to watch it in its entirety online between December 7th and 9th. After Rwanda I was convinced that the world had learned a lesson, but The Sudan is living proof that we have not.

Darfur is atop Don Cheadle's agenda
Dec 2, 2007
...Cheadle knows the Navy origins of that phrase, "not on my watch," the idea being that "if something bad happens while I'm on duty, I'm responsible." He wants to be responsible, and he's willing to do the lobbying and legwork to put pressure on the Arab government of Sudan to stop burning African, non-Muslim Sudanese out of their homes and villages.
