In 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus, illegally dividing the country and committing war crimes and mass human rights abuses. Hundreds of thousands of Greek Cypriots were ethnically cleansed by the Turkish army.
Turkey continues to violate international law and United Nations resolutions that demand the withdrawal of the Turkish army and the right to return for Greek Cypriot refugees.
We are protesting because Turkey still maintains its illegal apartheid regime that racially discrimates against Greek Cypriots by preventing them from returning to their homes and lands.
The Greek Cypriots are the legal owners of 82 percent of land in the occupied north and we want to return. We will never give up our properties to those who seek to profit from their theft and illegal purchase.
Is it right that Turkey, which aspires to join the European Union still maintains military occupation of one third of the Republic of Cyprus, a country which is a full member of the EU?
The human rights of the Cypriots must be restored, so that we may live in a truly reunited Cyprus with the full rights enjoyed by all other EU citizens.
While Turkey continues violating the human rights of EU citizens and destroying the European culture of occupied Cyprus, it is unacceptable that it is allowed to proceed with EU accession negotiations.

Turkish human rights violations in Turkey and Cyprus (2007)
Ismail Cem, Turkey's Foreign Minister recently complained that the European Union had offered Turkey only a "third class ticket" on the train of accession to the European Union. Others would say that Turkey was extremely fortunate to have even been considered for membership given its appalling tradition of human rights abuses.
For the past two hundred years, Turkey has achieved what is undoubtedly one of the worst human rights records in the world. The Turks have ethnically cleansed or otherwise mistreated ethnic minorities within Turkey and the peoples of neighbouring countries.
These include the Armenians, Bulgarians, Cypriots, Greeks, Kurds, Romanians and the Serbs. Turkey has the unenviable record of having conducted the first genocide of the 20th century when from 1915 to 1918 one and a half million indigenous Armenians were annihilated.
Lately, the Turks have turned their attention to those of their own people who have the courage to speak out against human rights abuses in Turkey.
Killings, disappearances and torture of lawyers, journalists, trade unionists, intellectuals and others remain well documented and are frighteningly commonplace in modern day Turkey.
Amnesty international recently reported that Turkey is the 5th worst country in the world for torture in jails, whilst the US State Department reports that the human rights situation in Turkey continues to deteriorate despite the promises of the Turkish government. In its annual report to Congress on human rights the Clinton administration stated that Turkish security forces committed "serious human rights abuses" during 1997.
Today, Turkey wages a dirty war against the Kurds who are fighting for recognition of their identity, and the right to express their language and culture. Almost 30,000 Kurds, government forces and civilians have been sacrificed. Three million Kurds are now refugees, and 3,000 Kurdish villages have been razed to the ground by Turkish troops.
This policy of human rights violations and ethnic cleansing is just as evident in the occupied north of Cyprus.
Turkey invaded the Republic of Cyprus in 1974 under the most spurious circumstances, causing death, rape, torture and forced displacement of persons, acts which are well documented by the European Court of Human Rights.
Turkey has created an illegal apartheid regime in the occupied area forcibly separating the Greek Cypriots from the Turkish Cypriots, violating a fundamental tenet of the European Union - the principle of free movement.
The few remaining Greek Cypriots enclaved in the occupied north are subject to continuous attack, harassment and intimidation, relying on United Nations protection and hand-outs in order to survive. They are also denied the right to secondary education, in violation of international law and the UN Charter on Human Rights.
No one can treat the hapless Mr Cem or Turkey itself with any credibility for so long as Turkey persists with her atrocious tradition of human rights violations. Sadly history teaches us that Turkey's policy on human rights has not and is unlikely to change.

The deaths of a couple of dozen Turkish troops in operations against the Kurds and the vote by the Turkish Parliament to in effect invade Northern Iraq to pursue operations against the Kurdish people has focused world attention on a conflict which the modern state of Turkey has pursued for many decades.
Last weekend I was in Cyprus (and yes my expenses were paid by my hosts) to attend events to continue to protest about the Turkish occupation of North Cyprus in particular the beautiful town of Morphu, twinned with my home Borough of Barnet.
Whereas over the last few years the legitimate Republic of Cyprus has made huge economic strides.
On the back of EU membership it operates as a mainstream European Country. The occupied north meanwhile continues to exist in a form of Asiatic poverty with an army of occupation of about 40,000 troops.
Most of the native Cypriots (both Greek and Turkish) have long since given up and abandoned the place to settlers flown in from Anatolia.
The desecration of Orthodox churches and the wholesale stripping and sale abroad of religious icons and archaeological treasures has to be seen to be believed and the ethnic cleansing carried out in the north of this magnificent island is as bad as anything experienced in the former Yugoslavia.
Yet as the new female Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis told me in rather a forceful manner - she has a touch of the Margaret Thatcher about her - there are thousands of Britons buying property illegally confiscated from Cypriots many of whom are my constituents in North London. In fact 95% of sales in the occupied area are to Brits.
Quite why anyone would buy property they have no legal entitlement to and which, when the eventual reunion of Cyprus comes, they may well lose with no compensation at all is beyond me. However the British Government sits back and does little to prevent these sales and the environmental damage to picturesque North Cyprus which the huge building boom is causing.
This last fortnight has also shown that Britain is not alone in playing softball with Turkey; the attitude of President Bush to Congress which was discussing the Armenian genocide was bizarre.
As the Armenian ambassador explained in his excellent piece on the New Statesman website last week, nobody with any common sense denies that the Armenian Genocide of 1915 onwards took place. Yet if the Germans can admit their guilt over the Nazi Holocaust why cannot the Turks do likewise?
The plucky little democratic country of Armenia still has to contend with a blockade by Turkey not to mention the aggression of its neighbour Azerbaijan whose idea of Democracy is to pass the presidency down from father to son.
So why this desire by Britain and the US to butter up Turkey? Gone is the Cold war threat from the Soviet Union and, with the election of President Gul, the Islamists are taking over Turkey anyway. Quite how the Turks imagine they can have any place in the EU whilst maintaining their belligerence on Cyprus, Armenia and towards the Kurds is beyond me.

THE APARTHEID NATION OF TURKEY The application of Kurdish politicians Aysel Tugluk and Ahmet T?rk to restore their status as members of parliament was dismissed. Turkey is managed by sunnis since 1950, now President, Prime minister, ministers are all sunni. There is not even 1 Alevi minister in the AKP government! But 35 to 40 percent of the population of Turkey is Alevi! Also there are no Alevi Governors, 81 of the 81 cities governors are all sunni too. The police force is nearly all sunni too! That means Alevis are not represented in the state and Alevis don't have the constitutional rights although the Turkish Constitution is clearly rejecting racism and apartheid!
In every part of the social life the doors are closed to the Alevi individuals. This is not declared openly but this rule is shaping the things as a hidden secret rule! Alevis are tolerated till they have success but if they became an academic rector or became a important high rank army officer sunnis are reacting! the researcher is a sunni but he also realize the ugly truth; if An Alevi is successful the sunni system is starting to oppress this person. You don't have to be an adult it starts in the primary school! If you are one of the best students in the school sunni teachers can give you some zeros without any reason! You can be the best student in that class but you are Alevi you should have low points because they don't want successful Alevis. This is happening even in the best schools of Turkey! Also the situation is same in the universities. If you are a state worker or officer or working for a private company you will also have problems because of being Alevi!
The sunnis will always give the jobs and positions to sunnis you can be the best engineer but you will be discriminated and a sunni will take your position. But if an Alevi decide for a job he/she will give the position to the one who deserves.
Also rich Alevis are attacked by the sunni state with every legal and illegal way. The sunni state don't want rich Alevis sunnis are taking our lands our companies by manipulating the laws and government power!
According to research Alevi Apartheid is rising and becoming more systematical day by day and this is the most strict and aggressive apartheid in Europe! The discrimination against Alevis is in every where state works or private works, education, employment, health, religion, during army duty. Alevi citizens are facing with different procedures because of their secularist peaceful religion and beliefs!
The different procedures against Alevis includes, hate speech, threatening, discrimination and even sometimes to death or torture!
Mr. Erdemir described this as ''The doors are all closed for every level of social life to Alevi people!'' Sadly he is right our struggle starts since child hood of course some Alevi babies are not lucky enough to survive during the sunni attacks. Many Alevi babies were massacred during Alevi Massacres by sunni civilians even some Alevi babies were tortured with their parents by sunni police!
The discrimination against Alevis includes apartments, cemeteries, accommodation sites and streets! In Turkey people are hiding their identities not to be targeted by sunnis! But that doesn't work for Alevis as hiding himself/herself is very hard mostly impossible for an Alevi. Alevis don't fast, don't pray namaz or go to mosque on friday, Alevis are very liberal Alevi women don't wear Turban or Burka or Niqap! Also the roots of Alevis are more clear due to the ottoman persecutions and Alevi Genocides! Alevi people lived as tribes to protect themselves so Alevi citizens are easy to track from their hometown or home villages.
The media is also controlled by sunnis. Alevis are good at science, art, literature, music most of the positive figures of Turkish history are Alevi people like Ataturk, Rumi, Asık Veysel, Yunus Emre. But no way if you are an Alevi you can not be a journalist, columnist and you can not write about Alevism in a newspaper. The media will only told what the sunni state want to be told about Alevis! Alevis are the owners of Turkish music and literature but there is not even 1 Alevi columnist in the Hurriyet Daily. You are an Alevi the more you make your job better the more sunnis will hate you! Things are different in Turkey!
The sunni state is building mosques in Alevi villages or Towns! Alevis pray in Cemevi (Alevi Worship House) so building a mosque to Alevi villages is just to make them uncomfortable! The sunni state is sometimes building 2 mosques in the same Alevi village but there are no sunnis living there! Also sunni state is putting sound systems to play sunni ezan in the Alevi villages which don't have mosques! And sunnis made Genocides to Alevis so quess how Alevis are feeling it is like building a nazi center in a Jewish town and playing the nazi songs 5 times a day!
The sunni state is oppressing Alevi villages by governors or by government officers. Sunni state is not serving Alevi villages water lines, schools, roads, health facilities are just other ways to oppress Alevis more. The sunni state is not building the roads or water lines or just building it cheaply and when it needs fixing state never fixes it. The sunni state don't want Alevis to be happy.
Hace Bektas is a Dai (Alevi Leader) who is very important for Alevis. Also according to research the percentage of Alevis who have friends from other ethnicities or other religions (non-muslim) or homosexual friends or Roman friends is very above the Turkey's general percentage. That is because of Alevism if you just search Alevism you will see that it is impossible for an Alevi to make discrimination against other people.
Also between 2002 and 2007 anti-Alevist islamo-fascist AKP government built 3555 sunni mosques! But there were only 179 Alevi Cemevis (Churchs) at the time! Sudan is the microcosm of Black Africa’s unacknowledged Arab problem, a problem of racism, colonialism, enslavement and an Arab agenda of cultural, political and territorial expansion at the expense of Black Africa. Q1: What is the basic problem in Sudan? In Sudan, Black Africans (The Afro-Sudanese in South Sudan, Darfur, Nubia, etc) are fighting against an Arab settler minority regime, ruling from Khartoum. They are fighting against a racist, Arab supremacist rule that is worse, much worse, than Apartheid. On Sunday, the people of Southern Sudan will begin voting on whether to remain part of a unified Sudan or become an independent state. Sudan, Africa’s largest nation, is an oil-rich country run by Islamist Arabs. What happens there matters to all of us for strategic and humanitarian reasons. Here’s what you need to know:
For generations, southern Sudan has been dominated by the Islamist-run government in Khartoum, which has sought to impose Sharia law on the south’s Christians and animists.
Religion is one of the main causes of two bloody civil wars that have killed two million southern Sudanese. Another point of contention: control of Sudan’s oil reserves that lie mostly in the south and along the border with the north. If, as expected, the south votes to secede, many fear another wave of violence, despite assurances from Sudan’s president, Omar al Bashir, that he will accept the results of the election: “If the south secedes, we will welcome it.”
But can Bashir be trusted? He has been indicted as a war criminal for his brutal military campaign against rebels and civilians in Darfur. That fighting, which began in 2003, has left 300,000 dead. Saudi Arabia flogged Christians for practicing their religion publicly. Christianity is discouraged but allowed if kept apart from the rest of society.
North African Arab states practice discrimination against native Berbers, though they are Muslim. [Saddam attempted genocide against the native Kurds of Iraq, though they are Muslims, too].
Then there is the Muslim Arab notion of Jews being inferior beings [like Nazi racism], leading to persecution of them [and expulsion of about 850,000].
Arab states exclude Palestinian Arab refuges from citizenship. Lebanon bars them from many occupations. They have been segregated.
Muslims in Egypt sometimes kidnap Christian children [and women] and forcibly convert them.
As for the Arabs in the Territories, they rule themselves. Israel does not rule them (StandWithUs )
The booklet mentioned Arab states expelling Palestinian Arabs, but that wasn’t segregation, that was self-defense. The Palestinian Arabs tried to overthrow or help Saddam overthrow their host country.
Isn’t it interesting that one does not hear protest over that real expulsion of Palestinian Arabs done by Arabs. One only hears protest over the non-expulsion of Palestinian Arab refugees from Israel. Such a selective ethical code does not seem ethical at all. It is a pretext.
Among the photographs were those of women murdered by Muslim relatives, even in the U.S., for being too Western or dating non-Muslims. It was pathetic, even heart-breaking, not just illegal.
Some readers accuse me of not caring about injustices to Arabs. If they read my articles, they will find that I report injustices to Arabs, but I find this is by Arabs to Arabs. These same readers never once showed any concern about that.
Some readers accuse Israel of racism. But the Arabs are the aggressors and Israelis the victims and defenders. Israelis see the conflict as a matter of defense or of territorial adjustment. By contrast, the Arab cause is religious, and the religious view is that Jews are inferior beings genetically disposed to bad character. That is racist. No one such reader ever denounced the real Muslim Arab racism. Their name-calling is not just poor upbringing, it is unjustified.

A few days ago, this case was brought to a court in Dubai, where the 36-year-old Ukrainian broker was charged with sexual exploitation, according to media reports.
But this is likely only the tip of the iceberg of human trafficking to the Persian Gulf.
Many people from poor Asian and East European countries go to the oil-rich region to work as domestic servants, labor workers or secretaries but find themselves actually forced into involuntary servitude and sexual practices, according to human rights organizations.
It's rather recurrent to hear stories of men and women from these areas bought by pimps and coerced into prostitution until they pay their "debts." The sad reality of sex trafficking is the other side of the coin for a region portrayed as a hub for trade and economic prosperity.
An extensive Feb. 23 report on the topic by Reuters' Lin Noueihed described one victim's misery:
Aysha sold her wedding gold to pay traffickers $200 to find her and a cousin jobs in Dubai. A world away from her village in Uzbekistan, she was forced to work in a disco and expected to offer sex. Beaten by her Uzbek boss when she shooed prospective clients away, she and her cousin fled and hid in airport toilets for two days, surviving on tap water.

Bahrain has announced it will scrap its sponsorship system for foreign workers - a first in a region often criticised by rights groups over the issue. The system, known as "kafala", is used to monitor the number of foreigners working in Gulf Arab economies, which rely heavily on cheap foreign labour, mostly recruited from countries from the Indian subcontinent.
Bahraini Labour Minister Majeed al-Alawi said the changes would be introduced in August.
Mr Alawi said the main change in the regulations would mean foreign workers would now be directly sponsored by the Labour Authority and would not rely on their employers.
The current system, which is common to all Gulf countries, has long been criticised by human rights groups for placing workers at the mercy of their employers.
Employers usually take employees' passports when they enter the country and sometimes use possession of the travel documents to extort a large fee before the workers can leave the country.
Overhaul
Gulf governments have historically welcomed immigrant workers on the assumption that nationals will not do many jobs, which they consider to be below them.
Despite this, Majeed al-Alawi told BBC Arabic radio that the new system would form part of a broader initiative to place a ceiling on the number of expatriate workers in Bahrain.
The US State Department in 2008 placed Bahrain in tier two - out of three - of its annual human trafficking report for not fully complying with minimum standards to stop the trafficking of people for forced labour or the sex trade.
Labour ministers of other Gulf countries have agreed that the present sponsorship system needs to be overhauled.
The system means that expatriate workers can enter, work, and leave the host country only with the permission or assistance of their sponsor. Many sponsors exploit the system to make money.
Since the 1970s, there has been a significant increase in the number of immigrants working in the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council or GCC (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates).
The pattern of immigration has also changed as South and Southeast Asian migrant workers have replaced Arab migrants.
They now constitute as much as 90% of the foreign workforce in some GCC States.
The "kafala" system has become the legal basis for residency and employment.
Migrant workers receive an entry visa and a residence permit only if a GCC citizen or a GCC institution employs them.
Sponsorship requires the sponsor-employer to assume full economic and legal responsibility for the employee during the contract period.
The worker can only work for the sponsor and is entirely dependent on their sponsor to remain in the country.
Vulnerable
In many GCC States, the sponsor is legally able to confiscate the passports of employees until their contract has ended.
Bahrain's Labour Minister Majeed al-Alawi likened the current system to slavery.
Women employed in domestic service are particularly vulnerable. If an employee sues their sponsor for violating labour practices, there is generally no form of unemployment protection while the case is pending in the legal system.
And even if the worker wins the case, the usual result is for the sponsor contract to be terminated, meaning that the worker has to leave the country.
While the "kafala" system provides the state with an important means for monitoring labour flow, these policies can infringe the rights of workers as they are often used to deny them justice and basic protection.

We were once called capitalist pigs or similar metaphors used by much of the communist world. It has been stated by a certain group of people living within America that we have white devils running the establishment. Far to many Black Americans have yet to move beyond the race issue while at the same time (unfortunately) racism is still practiced by just about every group within our borders. I have experienced racism in Asian restaurants. I have had Mexicans say to my face that, “some Blacks are just ignorant!” I have dealt with many Whites who have a sense of entitlement that excuses racism because after all, the “It's my country mentality” is still pervasive to some. I have dealt with the blatant ignorance of white supremacy as well. One experience I have yet to have occur of late is a black liberal or black conservative politician or so called black academia mention the historical facts concerning Islamic slavery and how the Arab countries subjugated entire communities or groups of human beings otherwise known as infidels to slavery. This timing is ripe for this discussion. When I read materials by Cornell West such as, Race Matters” or Jews and Blacks (let the healing begin) or when I read of the latest rant by what I have deemed to be our countries, 'super idiot' Al Sharpton, I wonder why Black America cannot move beyond victimization. It is as though we want white people to apologize for slavery and until they do we won't forgive, ever! Mauritania: Marginalised Black populations fight against Arabisation

Hundreds of Black Mauritanian students gathered at the University of Nouakchott Tuesday to express their outrage against what they call a “comprehensive Arabization” of Mauritania. The sit-in follows several demonstrations triggered by speeches, delivered by the Prime Minister and Minister of Culture. The students condemn a move to promote Arabic as a national language.
The atmosphere was tense on Tuesday at the University of Nouakchott. Under heavy police surveillance, Black Mauritanian students gathered, once again, to show their indignation over speeches given by the country's Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Moulaye Laghdaf and Culture Minister Cissé Mint Boide on March 1, a day set aside for the promotion of the Arabic language.
Strong statements calling for the primacy of the Arabic language in strategic areas including television, education, and administration, while reducing French and other national languages like Fulani, Wolof and Soninke to sheer Vernacular. “Everything is Arabized!”, hurled Yacouba Diakite, secretary general of the National Union of Mauritanian Students (SNEM), as he condemned the Arabic language broadcasts on Mauritanian television. He describes the speeches delivered by the two ministers as discriminatory and “disastrous” as they do not take into account the country's cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity.
This latest protest follows an initial demonstration that took place Wednesday, March 24. Mainly represented by members of the SNEM and bilingual clubs of the University of Nouakchott, the protesters hit the streets with two main requests : An apology from the Prime Minister who, by imposing Arabic as the sole administrative instrument of exchange and work, has given rise to a sense of cultural oppression among Black Mauritanians; And the resignation of the Minister of Youth and Culture, who, according Ndiaye Sarr Kane, spokesman for the demonstration, is incapable of representing Mauritania's multiculturalism. According to her, part of the minister's speech which read: “The national languages are obstacles to the emergence of the Arabic language,” were shocking.
The demonstration quickly turned violent as Arab students chanting “yes to Arabization!” clashed with the Black Mauritanians. The violence led to the arrest of several students by the police. The number of students arrested range between 4, according to Atlas Vista, and 8, according to RFI. Those arrested were released 24 hours later without being charged.
A multicultural country?
These multiple demonstrations has incurred strong reactions from the prime minister, who remains determined to justify his remarks, in an interview accorded to three journalists from the country's private media and published on the ruling party's (l'Union des forces de progress) website.
Interpreting his speech, according to him, requires placing it in its appropriate context. He further explains that the speech was made on the 1st of March, a day commemorated by 22 countries as a day of the Arabic language, following a decision by the Arab League, of which Mauritania has been a member since 1973. He insists that it was not unusual to place the language on a pedestal that day, he however denies denigrating the other national languages, which according to him, remain an integral part of the country. A country he describes as having both strong African and Arab roots.
Analysts believe that this is an essential fight for the Fulani, Wolof, Soninke and other black-skinned groups, who account for about a third of the country's population, as the Arabic language consolidates the position of the Arab-Berber majority who wield more political and economic power, and who have often been accused of enslaving the minority Black populations. Slavery which is still practiced by the Arab-Berber populations was abolished three times in Mauritania in the last century alone. In 2002, Action for Change (AC), a political party which campaigned for greater rights for blacks and the descendants of slaves, was banned by the government.
Symptomatic of a deep malaise, the question of identity has rocked the Mauritanian landscape since 1966; a year that saw a massive mobilization of Black students in Nouakchott to ask for the suppression of a law that sought to make the use Arabic language in secondary education compulsory. A cultural constraint for the Black minority, natives of the region of the Senegal River Basin, the issue has remained latent for nearly half a century.
