Arab scholar: "torture is a way of life" in the Middle East , Bradley: since 1952, Egypt has brtually occupied its people by its military

John Bradley: 'Inside Egypt'

Review

"'Inside Egypt is an original, angry, brilliant, subtle, and highly readable expose of contemporary Egyptian politics and society.' - Peter Bergen, author of Holy War Inc. and The Osama bin Laden I Know 'A highly informed, temperate, and understanding account of a country that is an enigma.' - The New York Times 'Contributes substantially to the debate.' - Los Angeles Times 'A thoughtful, incisive portrait of a fractured nation...a remarkable volume.' - Newsweek"

Journalist Bradley (Saudi Arabia Exposed, 2005) trains a sharp reportorial eye on the nearly failed nation-state in the cross hairs of world conflict. The author doesn't dwell too long on Egypt's storied past. Instead, he gives a blistering overview of what it's like to live today in this autocratic, hopelessly corrupt society. The Egypt he depicts is a place where anyone can be jailed or tortured at any time for no reason, where Islamic fundamentalism is slowly gaining a foothold among people formerly proud of their diverse heritage, where in some places the only viable form of employment for young men is prostitution, both gay and straight. Bradley also examines why the United States spends $2 billion per year propping up President Hosni Mubarak ("the third-longest-ruling Egyptian leader in the past four thousand years"), despite his crackdowns on anything approaching democracy and his blatant favoring of anything that will bring in more tourist dollars over the best interests of the Egyptian populace. Mubarak is able to gin up American interest, the author notes, by playing up the threat of the Muslim Brotherhood, a nominally political organization that provides social services far more efficiently than the government does and wants to reinstate the Caliphate. Needless to say, Bradley isn't hopeful about the future, fearing that an Iranian-style theocracy is in the cards for a once-proud nation whose pedigree dates back more than 5,000 years.Unlikely to win the author any friends among the Egyptian political elite, but terrifically well told and extremely sobering. [By an Arab scholar:] "torture is a way of life" in the Middle East (p. 144)

In Inside Egypt, I argue that the country has effectively been occupied since 1952 by the military. The military have created a system of oppression that has only one goal: perpetuating their own rule and increasing their own wealth and privilege. For this to happen, the Egyptian people must be cowed into subservience through systematic torture and other crude forms of intimidation.

EXCLUSIVE: Hamas-Fatah: Torture and Calm

EXCLUSIVE: Hamas-Fatah: Torture and Calm

Hamas claims this is a photo of a Fatah officer torturing a Hamas member.

Hamas operatives counter, claiming that Fatah brutality is the root cause of the troubles in the Gaza Strip. The Media Line has obtained footage, in which a leading Hamas member presents what he says is conclusive proof that Fatah men tortured members of his group.

The Media Line sent a camera crew into the heart of Gaza, where Western journalists simply fear to tread. This is part of that footage, which is being distributed across the globe, giving viewers a first look at the reality that Gaza has become, since Hamas claimed victory.

“It’s not black and white, it’s just black,” said a leading professor from Gaza’s Al-Azhar University, in looking at Gaza, two weeks after Hamas claimed a convincing victory in its battle with Fatah. While some speak of calm returning to the streets of Gaza, we hear a bleak forecast for the area’s future.

Hamas and Hamas alone is in control of the strip, according to the professor.

The Media Line’s cameras recorded an unusual meeting of Palestinian children and Israeli soldiers on the day Hamas defeated Fatah, and Israeli troops rolled briefly into Gaza.

Kinder, Gentler Islamofascism

Here’s a little something that I think still has relevance today…

Subject: How to GENTLY impose Islamic rule on Society...a kinder, Gentler Islamo-fascism!

What is written on the white-board behind revolutionary guard commander Talaii (in larger black font)

a.. If you see women with thick lipstick, don’t use a razor blade to slash their faces (as has been permissible and very much done by the disciplinary forces patrolling the cities), use Kleenex.

b.. If you see too much makeup on women’s faces, don’t spray their faces with acid (as has been permissible and very much done by the disciplinary forces patrolling the cities), use rosewater.

c.. If women are wearing too short of a dress, give them a free chador (veil).

d.. If their scarves is too short, don’t use the slogan of: “yaa roo sari, yaa too sari” (which means ”either wear a scarf, or get smacked on the head”...this has been one of the regime’s most disgusting comments to Iranians women since the very early days of the revolution).

e.. Either cover their entire hair or gently cut their hair off.

The caption, in the bottom of the photo reads: The head of the police force of Tehran said: “The Irshad (guidance) Patrols should not treat people with an antagonistice approach.”

This is their attempt at a kinder, gentler Mullacracy!
