Memorial Day: More Than Just a Vacation Day - ... And thus began the international war against Islamo-fascism

Memorial Day: More Than Just a Vacation Day - ... And thus began the international war against Islamo-fascism

The News & Advance
Published: May 25, 2008

Say the phrase “Memorial Day,” and more people than you’d imagine will think of city pools opening, the first three-day weekend of the year, cookouts, the unofficial start of summer, big sales at the mall. Fewer and fewer people today would first think it’s the day to honor America’s war dead.

How sad it is that the nation’s most somber holiday has turned into a day for pool parties, grilling up some burgers and dogs and snagging some bargains on markdown.

Over the course of the nation’s 228-year history, millions of men and women have answered their country’s call to service to defend freedom and liberty, not just for ourselves but often for the world. Tens of thousands of them gave the ultimate sacrifice, the last full measure of devotion, their very lives to the nation they love.

That’s the sole purpose of this day: honoring those men and women and remembering their sacrifices.

America is now in the sixth year of the war in Iraq, a conflict in which more than 4,000 U.S. soldiers have died. As a nation, for at least this one day, let’s put aside the endless arguments over whether we should have invaded Iraq … let’s not debate whether it’s possible to create democracy in the Arab world … let’s stop fighting over the planning, or lack thereof, for the post-war period … and please, let’s stop babbling on that the war was just about oil.

Let’s just focus on the men and women who’ve put themselves in harm’s way for their country.

It was almost seven years ago, that 19 Islamo-fascist terrorists launched attacks on Washington, D.C., and New York City, killing close to 3,000 people in a matter of minutes at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pa.

In the dark days following the attacks, Americans of all stripes realized there is indeed evil in this world, people whose entire purpose in life is to bring down the exemplar of Western culture: the United States of America.

And thus began the international war against Islamo-fascism. In fundamentalist Afghanistan (the lair of the Taliban and al-Qaida) and the dictatorship of Iraq (the well of simmering Arab frustration that had to be drained to make the region fertile ground for democracy, the argument went), hundreds of thousands of American soldiers hit the ground, to protect both their own nation and to liberate the people living under the thumbs of brutal leaders.

Their country called, and they responded, without reservation and knowing full well the dangers they faced.

Has the government of this nation had their backs at all times? Hardly. Just recall the horrible stories The Washington Post broke last year about the rancid conditions wounded veterans faced in Walter Reed Army Medical Center and replicated in military hospitals around the country. Then there’ve been the stories about faulty equipment and lack of proper resources that troops have had to face. This nation’s civilian and military leaders, from President Bush on down, ought to hang their heads in shame for the way they’ve treated the men and women of the armed services.

But still, America’s sons and daughters are answering the nation’s call to service, and will continue to do so. Not because they’re Republicans or Democrats, not because they’re nationalistic chest-thumpers, not because they’re capitalism’s storm troopers.

No, rather because they are willing to sacrifice and possibly die for a simple concept: the dignity of mankind and the value of a single life.

That’s what Memorial Day is all about.

McCain addresses Islamo-fascist threat

McCain addresses Islamo-fascist threat

John McCain discusses Islamo-fascism and environmental concerns at the Top of the Hop on Monday.

Lauding himself as the most truthful of the Republican presidential candidates, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., worked to rally support in a final effort to win over New Hampshire voters before the upcoming primary in a speech given at the Top of the Hop Monday afternoon.

"We've come a long way back and that's because we told the people of New Hampshire the truth," McCain said. "You can't buy an election in the state of New Hampshire. I hope that I have earned your respect."
Lauding himself as the most truthful of the Republican presidential candidates, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., worked to rally support in a final effort to win over New Hampshire voters before the upcoming primary in a speech given at the Top of the Hop Monday afternoon.

“We’ve come a long way back and that’s because we told the people of New Hampshire the truth,” McCain said. “You can’t buy an election in the state of New Hampshire. I hope that I have earned your respect.”

McCain encouraged voters to do as much as they could to support him in the final hours before the first-in-nation primaries.

“I’m asking you to call your friends; I’m asking you to do the things that win elections,” he said.

The presidential hopeful spoke at length about the threat of ‘Islamo-fascist extremism,’ identifying it as one of the most grave issues facing the United States today.

“[Islamo-fascist extremists] are the greatest force of evil perhaps we have ever confronted,” he said.

The senator added that the U.S. has made progress fighting these extremists in Iraq and criticized Democrats who had favored setting a timeline for withdrawing troops.

McCain said that had the government decided to pull American troops out of Iraq, “Al-Qaeda would be saying they defeated the United States of America and they didn’t then and they never will.”

In addition, McCain underscored his positions on climate change and political corruption, as well as his foreign policy record, claiming 20 years of experience in dealing with national security issues.

He spoke optimistically about America’s ability to prevent climate change, discussing the possibility of expanding the use of nuclear power in the U.S.

“We can unleash American technology,” he said. “There’s a whole range of things we can do, and one of them is nuclear power.”

McCain acknowledged that there is controversy surrounding the energy source, but cited the existence of American naval ships that contain nuclear power plants and the fact that 80 percent of French electricity is generated by nuclear power as proof of its safety.

“I’m going to give you a cleaner planet — I promise you that,” McCain said.

The senator continued by protesting corrupt congressional spending.

“We have mortgaged your futures” he said, addressing the young people in the audience. “If we don’t fix things, you’re not going to have social security, you’re not going to have Medicare when you retire.”

McCain pointed to the $255 million that Congress has approved for a “bridge to an island with 50 people living on it” in Alaska as an example of the types of government spending he would like to prevent.

“I’m going to veto every pork barrel spending bill,” he said.

McCain kept his speech short, light and routine. In one aside, he quoted Ronald Reagan as saying, “Congress spends money like a drunken sailor, except that I never knew any sailor, drunk or sober, with the imagination of congress.”

McCain added that once, after he mentioned that quote, he received an angry e-mail from a drunken sailer who felt insulted to be compared to Congress, an anecdote McCain has used often while on the campaign trail.

McCain was accompanied by his wife and daughters, as well as by Gov. Jim Douglas, R-Vt., who introduced and endorsed McCain’s run for the presidency.

Italian police arrest 20 Muslims across Europe in suspected suicide bomb plots in Iraq, Afghanistan

Italian police arrest 20 across Europe in suspected suicide bomb plots in Iraq, AfghanistanBy COLLEEN BARRY
The Associated Press

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003997253_webitalyterror06.html

MILAN, Italy — A Europe-wide sweep disrupted an Islamic cell that was recruiting potential suicide bombers for attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan, Italian police said Tuesday, announcing the arrests of 20 terror suspects.
Police said the suspects, mostly Tunisians, were arrested across Europe as part of the sweep against a cell based in the northern Italian region of Lombardy.
Executing the arrest warrants, police said they found al-Qaida manuals for making explosives, detonation devices and poisons, and instructions on guerrilla techniques.
"The investigation has revealed recruitment, training and passage to aspiring terrorists to Iraq and Afghanistan," lead investigator Gen. Giampaolo Ganzer, of Italy's paramilitary Carabinieri police, told a news conference.
The suspects were wanted on charges ranging from association with the aim of committing international terrorism to falsifying documents to aid illegal immigrants.
"Once more, the central role of Milan and Lombardy in the panorama of Islamic militants has been confirmed," the Carabinieri said in a statement.
The group's members had been indoctrinated in militancy in mosques since at least 1998, according to police transcripts, and appeared to take serious precautions.
In one intercepted call, a suspected cell member said that "things are being done with extreme calm, haste does not bring the desired results."
Eleven were arrested in the northern Italian cities of Milan, Reggio Emilia, Imperia and Bergamo. Nine others were arrested on warrants issued in France, Britain and Portugal, Italian news agencies reported.
Authorities in Britain, France and Portugal confirmed arrestC.
The Lombardy cell had ties with a group in neighboring Emilia Romagna whose aim is to establish an Islamic state extending from Morocco to China, Italian investigators said. Intercepted phone calls made clear the aim of sending jihadist fighters to Iraq via Syria, including specific instructions on shaving off beards before departure to give the impression of making a "peaceful trip."
Ganzer said that while the main aim of the group were attacks aimed at western targets in Iraq and Afghanistan, they also had ties to groups that planned attacks in Italy. Police said the Milan-based cell helped a Tunisian involved in planning a failed attack in Bologna flee to France in 2006. The attack was meant to be carried out around Italy's national elections in April 2006, police said.

Giuliano Amato, Italy's interior minister, said the suspects are mostly Tunisian. He praised the sting as an example of strong cooperation among European countries.
In Britain, authorities said two suspects were arrested in London and Manchester and face extradition to Italy. The men, identified as Ali Chehidi, 34, and Mohamed Khermiri, 53, were accused of forging documents to help volunteers enter Italy illegally.
Portuguese police said they arrested a North African in the northern Portuguese city of Porto on suspicion of international terrorism, illegal immigration and smuggling. He had been in Portugal for three years and had a Portuguese residence permit allowing travel within Europe's Schengen area.
