UN fears on Pakistan's nukes

A WARNING from the UN atomic watchdog that Pakistan's nuclear arsenal could be seized by al-Qa'ida has been endorsed by reports that say extremists have penetrated "the state machinery".

The Daily Times asked: "How big is the number of those inside the state apparatus who owe allegiance to al-Qa'ida or hate the United States enough to place the country's nuclear assets in the hands of those they regard as the most legitimate 'Islamic response' to the policies of the US?"

The newspaper suggested last month's escape from custody of alleged al-Qa'ida trans-Atlantic airline bomb plotter Rashid Rauf was an "inside job" and said he had been "helped to vanish into the no-go territory of the tribal areas that have been virtually annexed by al-Qa'ida and its Taliban followers".

Leaks from the investigations into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto "point again and again to a facilitating hand inside the state structure", the paper said.
