Pakistan’s bombing seen a big blow for markets Reuters India

Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:25pm IST By Sahar Ahmed

KARACHI, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A suicide bomb attack which killed at least 53 people in the Pakistani capital Islamabad will be a big blow to foreign investment and will lead to further weakening of the rupee which is already trading at a record low, dealers and analysts said on Sunday.

A suicide attacker set off a huge truck bomb on Saturday night at the Marriott Hotel, part of a U.S.-based chain and a favourite haunt of diplomats and rich Pakistanis.

The Czech ambassador and an American and German national were among the dead, while more than 270 people were wounded in the worst militant attack in the capital.

“In the short-term, its another hammering for the rupee,” said a currency dealer.

“It’s a big blow for foreign investment as foreigners are going to feel less secure in investing in Pakistan and the fact that the government is not able to control these attacks does not leave much confidence in the market.”

The Pakistani rupee weakened to to a record low of 78.27 against the dollar on Saturday because of weak economic fundamentals and the global financial crisis.

It has lost 21.3 percent against the dollar since the beginning of the the year.

Dealers also said the market was short of dollars because of the central bank’s buy/swap operations. The central bank has been buying

DELHI, India, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A series of small bombs were detonated in crowded New Delhi marketplaces Saturday, killing at least 30 people, Indian authorities said.

Besides those killed, at least 90 people were injured in the five blasts police said occurred within 30 minutes of each other in the Karol Bagh, Greater Kailash and Connaught Place markets, the Times of India reported. Three more explosive devices were defused, including one at Children's Park at India Gate, the newspaper said.

TV news channel CNN-IBN said it received an e-mail shortly before the blasts from a group calling itself the Indian Mujahedin.

"Do whatever you can. Stop us if you can," the e-mail said.

Indian Mujahedin has claimed to be behind recent bombings in Jaipur and Bangalore.

Islamic group claims Delhi bombs

By Krittivas Mukherjee and Bappa Majumdar

Monday, 15 September 2008

Police are trawling slums and criminal hideouts in India's capital rounding up suspects after serial bombings in the city on Saturday killed at least 21 people and wounded nearly 100.

Police said they were pursuing several leads, including talking to an 11-year-old boy who said he had seen two men drop off a large plastic bag at one of the blast sites.

At hospitals, relatives of victims accused police of failing to protect them. "Down with the police," they shouted, some with tears in their eyes. "We don't trust you any more."

"Helpless?" read the banner headline of the Sunday Times newspaper, expressing growing frustration at the inability of authorities to prevent a string of bomb attacks in recent months...A group calling itself the Indian Mujahedin sent an email to television stations shortly after the first explosion saying it was responsible.

Fresh violence in Mosul, two Christians kidnapped and killed

The kidnapping of two Christians has ended in tragedy, after the family of one paid a ransom of 20,000 dollars. The community of Mosul hopes that the Muslims will strongly condemn the murders.

Mosul (AsiaNews) - The Iraqi Christian community is again in the sights of Islamic fundamentalists in Mosul: today news came of the death of a 65-year-old doctor, Tariq Qattan, kidnapped recently by a terrorist group. AsiaNews sources say that his family had paid a ransom of 20,000 U.S. dollars. But it was not enough money to free Tariq Qattan, one of the many Christians kidnapped by fundamentalists for extortion.

Also in Mosul, two days ago - although the news has just been released today - another Christian, Nafi Haddad, was kidnapped and killed. It is not yet known whether or not a ransom was paid. Despite the small signs of improvement that seem to come from Iraq, the Christian community is still witnessing more violence: Mosul has long been the theater of a genuine slaughter, forcing more than two thirds of the faithful to flee elsewhere in search of safety.

The diocese has paid a large tribute in blood in recent years, beginning with the tragic kidnapping of Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, whose lifeless body was found last March 13 in an abandoned area just outside of the city. During the ambush that preceded the archbishop's captivity, the three men acting as his bodyguard were massacred by the terrorists.

In 2007, the Iraqi Christian community suffered 47 deaths, 13 of them in Mosul: these include Fr Ragheed Gani, murdered on June 3, and two other priests.

Between January 6 and 17 of this year, there was also a series of attacks on Christian property. A wave of bombings struck the Chaldean church of the Immaculate Virgin, the Chaldean Church of St Paul, which was almost destroyed, the entrance to the orphanage run by the Chaldean sisters in al Nour, a Nestorian church, and the convent of the Dominican sisters in Mosul Jadida.

The source for AsiaNews in Mosul hopes that the two latest homicides will be "forcefully condemned" by the Muslim community, which has just celebrated the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Atrocities carried out "in the name of religion"...

Gates to brief Bush on Iraq recommendations....Meanwhile, fatal bombings shattered a period of relative calm in the Iraqi capital Tuesday at the start of Ramadan, Islam's holiest month.

A roadside bomb detonated near al-Kindi Hospital in eastern Baghdad, killing two civilians and wounding 13 others, including several policemen, an interior ministry official said.

Another roadside bomb exploded in western Baghdad's al-Harthiya neighborhood, killing two civilians and wounding 10, the official said.

Outside the capital city, a suicide truck bomber targeted an Iraqi army checkpoint in the northern city of Mosul, killing seven civilians and wounding seven others, the official said.

The violence coincides with Ramadan, which began Tuesday for Shia Muslims in Iraq. Sunni Muslims in the country began observing the month Monday.

The exact start of Ramadan -- Islam's ninth month -- depends on the sighting of the new moon. Muslims are required to abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.

The month of fasting ends with Eid al-Fitr, three days of feasts and celebrations

Extortion syndicate behind Digos City bombing, bishop says [Sep 2, 2008]

By LESLIE ANN G. AQUINO

DIGOS CITY — Digos Bishop Guillermo Afable said yesterday a syndicate out to extort money from bus companies was responsible for the bombing of a bus in the province the other day.

Afable’s disclosure was made in his statement posted yesterday on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

The Digos prelate, however, did not identify the members and leaders of the syndicate.

The bishop bewailed that Monday’s bombing incident resulted in the "loss of lives of innocent people."

"We are grieving here," he said.

"It is a heinous crime against innocent men, women and children [and] have nothing to do with the political, economic, or personal agenda of the perpetrators of the said crime," added the prelate.

Afable said the crime "becomes even more grievous in the context of compounding socio-political and economic ills already burdening our people, especially the poor."

He asked the faithful Lumad, Christian and Muslim to pray for truth, justice, love and freedom. He also requested that prayers be said for the victims and their families.

Bishop Afable also appealed to both the police authorities and public officials to curb lawlessness in their areas of responsibilities and safeguard every citizen from criminals and terrorists.

The people, for their part, should also cooperate with law enforcement officers in securing the safety and security of both private homes and public places, he said.

The bombing incident which occurred Monday noon at the Digos City Bus Terminal killed at least six people and left 28 injured.

Last July 23, a Weena bus exploded, killing one person and wounding 32 others.

Extortion gang uses women to plant bombs

MANILA (DPA) - Philippine police said Tuesday that an extortion gang that has been blamed for two recent bombings in a southern city uses women as bomb carriers for the deadly attacks.

Six people, including a pregnant woman, were killed and 30 injured Monday when a bomb ripped through a bus in Digos City in Davao Del Sur province, 1,005 kilometres south of Manila.

Senior Superintendent Cesario Darantinao, provincial police director, said the al-Khobar extortion gang was the main suspect in the bombing.

He said a woman was believed to have planted the bomb after witnesses said a female passenger hurriedly left the Metro Shuttle company bus before the blast.

Darantinao said police were also looking for a woman suspect in the bombing of another Metro Shuttle bus July 24 in Digos City, which killed two people.

‘’The al-Khobar gang must have decided to tap women to sow terror because they do not gain undue attention from authorities most of the time,’’ said a police investigator who requested anonymity.

The al-Khobar gang is composed of rogue Muslim separatist rebels who have resorted to criminal activities to raise money. It has been blamed for numerous attacks on bus companies and other firms.

[Islamic Ramadan "holy" Venemous Fatwa] Islamic Jihad: No Peace for Israelis

Islamic Jihad: No Peace for Israelis

By STEVEN GUTKIN

The Associated Press

Thursday, October 11, 2007; 3:06 PM

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip -- The militant known as Abu Hamza is constantly on the run from Israel, and his hideout today is a dank room at the back of a nondescript house filled with adults and frolicking children.

The room is barren except for a computer hooked up to the Internet, which the Islamic Jihad commander said is used to plan rocket attacks on southern Israel. He pledged to keep up the violence despite the growing likelihood of a major Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

"We must create a balance of terror with the enemy," he told The Associated Press in a rare interview.

Abu Hamza is a small, soft-spoken man with a wide smile, but the rockets that Islamic Jihad fires into Israel almost daily serve as constant reminders that renewed talk of Mideast peace remains a distant dream in the violence-torn Gaza Strip.

Israel's military says Gaza militants have fired some 980 rockets into Israel since June, when Hamas seized power in the coastal territory. That compares to 440 in the preceding four months. In all, thousands of crude rockets fired over the past seven years have killed 12 Israelis, wounded dozens and disrupted life for thousands.

Israeli troops and settlers withdrew from Gaza more than two years ago _ and Israel has begun a fledgling peace process with the moderate Palestinian forces now in control of the West Bank. So why is Islamic Jihad still raining missiles on Israeli towns, provoking fierce retaliation and a new Israeli threat to cut off Gaza's electricity?

This is the Palestinians' way of offsetting Israel's sophisticated military machine, Abu Hamza said. Israel's decision to seal Gaza's borders after Hamas militants took control is another reason the rockets are justified, he said.

"Our rockets go over those borders," he said.

Islamic Jihad, a virulently anti-Israel group backed by Iran and Syria, has killed dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings and is believed to have about 2,000 militants armed with M-16 and AK-47 automatic rifles, grenades and anti-tank weapons.

It operates independently of the much larger Hamas, whose tolerance and sometimes encouragement of rocket attacks have increased Gaza's isolation. Hamas' blind eye to Islamic Jihad rockets _ along with mortar fire by its own militants _ has helped burnish its credentials among Gazans as a "government of resistance." But it is also endangering Hamas' rule in Gaza by contributing to the economic decline.

Contacts known by AP journalists to be Islamic Jihad members arranged the meeting with Abu Hamza, his nom de guerre that is well known in Gaza even if his face is not. He spoke to AP reporters without donning the black ski mask usually worn by senior militants in press interviews, but he refused to allow himself to be filmed, photographed or recorded.

During the session, he wore a loose-fitting shirt instead of the military fatigues associated with Islamic Jihad. Though he carried no weapon, some of the men around him did _ sitting nearby on ragged floor mats in the paint-chipped room. No food or drink was served in observance of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

[Islamic bloody Ramadan & Violent Eid Al-Fitr] Iraq bombs and shootings kill at least 32

[Islamic bloody Ramadan & Violent Eid Al-Fitr] Iraq bombs and shootings kill at least 32

[October 15, 2007]

http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5i5-TvYdY3nfSH0bBy2GUINj2gUkg

BAGHDAD (AFP) — A wave of violence across Iraq, including the bombing of a minibus filled with Shiite worshippers and a suicide truck bomb attack on a police station, has killed 32 people, officials said Sunday.

Dozens of people were wounded in the attacks, which came as Muslims were celebrating the Eid al-Fitr festival that ends the holy fasting month of Ramadan, the officials said.

Ten people, including three women and two children, were killed on Sunday when a car bomb exploded next to their minibus as they were heading towards a Shiite shrine in northern Baghdad, Iraqi military officials told AFP.

Women and children were also among 18 wounded by the blast in Aden square, which was then sealed off to vehicles by the security forces.

Late on Saturday, a suicide truck bomber supported by several gunmen carried out a coordinated attack on a police station in Samarra, 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Baghdad.

The truck exploded about 100 metres away from the intended target before a gunfight between the insurgents and the police.

"Seventeen people were killed and 27 wounded when a suicide truck bomber targeted police commandos in Samarra," a police official told AFP.

The massive night-time explosion destroyed several buildings in a residential area of the city and on Sunday people crowded around the debris as an earthmover cleared away the piles of rubble.

It was not immediately clear if any insurgents were among the dead, many of whom were women and children.

Five people were also killed in two separate attacks on Sunday south of Baghdad.

Four civilians died in clashes between security forces and unidentified gunmen in the mixed town of Iskandiriyah, 60 kilometres from the capital.

A fifth man was killed when gunmen opened fire on civilians in a village further south near the town of Hilla, police said.

The festive period had already got off to a bloody start with a US air raid killing 15 women and children on Thursday, and a suicide attack on a playground in the northern town of Tuz the following day.

In Tuz, the bomber exploded a cart full of toys and sweets in a crowded playground, killing a child and a father, and wounding 20 other children.
